Background
As per President, Reshma Ramchurn:
“170,000 people in Mauritius are currently affected by kidney diseases, and around 1,500 are treated each week in our healthcare facilities. However, there are only 14 dialysis units in the country. This is why the Rotary Club of Phoenix is launching a humanitarian support project this year, aimed at improving the care conditions for patients with chronic kidney failure in Dialysis Units across Mauritius.”
Objective
Because chronic kidney disease is increasingly affecting Mauritians, often silently, the Rotary Club (RC) of Phoenix has chosen to make it its new cause. Through a close partnership with the Ministry of Health, the organization aims to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of dialysis patients while raising public awareness about this still little-known public health issue. Just like its previous initiatives—Lizie avan tou and the Squint Project—this new project will be rolled out in several phases.
The first step: the donation of 36 wheelchairs to Long Mountain Hospital, scheduled for Friday, June 27. And this is just the beginning: hospital infrastructure upgrades, ongoing staff training in collaboration with experts from India, and the strengthening of institutional partnerships will further enhance this ambitious, human-centered program.
In addition to the donation of 36 adapted wheelchairs, significant renovation work is also planned for the dialysis center: repainting, new flooring, improved ventilation, installation of more comfortable seating, and the creation of new hygiene stations.
With a long-term vision in mind, the Rotary Club of Phoenix also plans to establish partnerships with leading medical institutions and international specialists to provide technical training and targeted support for nursing staff and dialysis technicians.
President Reshma Ramchurn: “We also need to raise awareness about kidney health. The goal is not only to improve the daily lives of patients already receiving treatment but also to prevent, educate, and promote earlier diagnosis, to avoid more Mauritians ending up on dialysis in the future.”
