End Polio Now 2025 - PHWA outing with Rotary Club of Phoenix - Mauritius 02

Background

Polio is a disease that once deeply marked communities across the world, including Mauritius. In 1945, the island was struck by poliomyelitis, leaving many children and young people facing lifelong physical challenges. In response, compassionate citizens came together in 1960 to form what is today known as the Physically Handicapped Welfare Association (PHWA), a centre dedicated to rehabilitation, dignity, and support.

For decades, Rotary has stood at the forefront of the global fight against polio through the Rotary International PolioPlus programme, launched in 1985 to eradicate this devastating disease worldwide. World Polio Day is not only a reminder of how far we have come, but also of the people whose lives continue to be shaped by its impact.

The Rotary Club of Phoenix has had the privilege of walking alongside PHWA over the years through meaningful initiatives; from shared meals and collaborative activities to the recent Green House Project.

Each action, simple or ambitious, has been rooted in the same intention: presence, respect, and continued partnership.

Objective

[October 2025] In the spirit of World Polio Day, the Club organised a special day out for PHWA members and staff. The programme included a cinema experience and lunch at Bagatelle Mall, bringing together over 50 participants for a day of relaxation, laughter, and shared moments.

While modest in scale, the intention was profound. Beyond the outing itself, the day represents connection, time spent together outside routine settings, creating memories and reinforcing bonds built over years of collaboration.

Service is not defined only by large projects or grand gestures. It is often found in consistency; in showing up year after year, in listening, and in nurturing relationships grounded in mutual respect.

Through the World Polio Day project, the Rotary Club of Phoenix renewed its commitment to stand alongside the PHWA community. Together, we honoured resilience, celebrated inclusion, and continued building a society where care and solidarity remain at the centre of our actions.
