Background
90 consultations and 40 successful surgeries! That’s the outcome of the first diabetic retinopathy surgery campaign conducted in 2024 by the Rotary Club (RC) of Phoenix, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Thane in India and the S. Bharati Eye Hospital in Moka.
Building on this success, the RC of Phoenix is renewing the initiative in 2025. Two Indian specialists: Dr. Sweta Patro, a retina consultant, and Dr. Karan Annapur Kumarswamy, an ophthalmologist specialized in vitreoretinal surgery are once again in Mauritius from 25 May to 1 June to offer their expertise.
In Mauritius, many patients are currently awaiting surgical intervention for vitreoretinal disorders.
“Behind these numbers are lives hanging in the balance, and too often, the tragic outcome is blindness. With eye health being a long-standing priority for the Rotary Club of Phoenix, we chose to act by launching the ‘Lizie avan tou’ campaign in 2024, which was a great success. This year, we are reaffirming our commitment with a second edition,” explained our President, Reshma Ramchurn.
Preserving eyesight means preserving quality of life. And for the Rotary Club of Phoenix, eye health is not just one issue among many, it is a priority.
Objective
The mission’s objectives are threefold: to bring hope to patients suffering from this condition, to strengthen the technical skills of local healthcare professionals, and to raise public awareness on the importance of early detection and prevention.
“Vision plays a crucial role in our quality of life and often reflects our overall health. The club has been actively promoting early screening and prevention of eye diseases for several years, multiplying initiatives and partnerships to provide Mauritian patients with high-level support. Together with institutions, doctors, Rotarians, and partners, we are bringing light where it is beginning to fade,” added the President of the RC of Phoenix.
Thanks to the active partnership between the Rotary Club of Thane, the Ministry of Health, and the Subramania Bharati Eye Hospital in Moka, the two Indian eye specialists have once again been invited to Mauritius this year to treat a second group of patients. They will carry out consultations and corrective surgeries at the S. Bharati Eye Hospital in Moka from 26 to 30 May. Hospital staff will assist the surgeons, while patients’ medical files will be prepared in advance by the attending consultants. Training sessions will also be held to enhance local skills during the mission.
