LEGO Braille Project - Rotary Club of Phoenix, Mauritius

Background

For several years, the Rotary Club of Phoenix has been actively supporting the education of visually impaired children through various initiatives, such as the Squint Project, where international experts were invited to consult and operate on children suffering from strabismus free of charge; the creation of a sensory garden at the Loïs Lagesse Centre; and a diabetic retinopathy awareness campaign.

This new commitment to accessible learning reflects the organization’s desire to build a future where every child, regardless of their condition, can thrive. Made possible through the efforts of Mr. Ravin Lama, CEO of the organization Mind Initiatives, and the generous support of the LEGO® Foundation, this donation aims to transform the learning experience of visually impaired children.

Used primarily in Europe and Western countries, LEGO® Braille Bricks are being introduced in Mauritius for the first time, offering children an innovative and inclusive method of education.

Objective

The Rotary Club of Phoenix’s commitment to eye health is reaffirmed with this new campaign. Following several similar initiatives, this time we are supporting visually impaired children in Mauritius by introducing this educational innovation to the country and to the students of the Lois Lagesse Trust Fund, a first both locally and regionally. Through this initiative, we are not only providing an innovative learning tool but also promoting the idea that education can be accessible, enjoyable, and inclusive.

I would like to express our deep gratitude to the educators and dedicated staff of the Lois Lagesse Trust Fund, who work tirelessly to empower students to thrive and reach their full potential. They are the true heroes of today, and their efforts inspire us to do more, give more, and advocate for a more inclusive society, emphasized Reshma Ramchurn, President of the Rotary Club of Phoenix.

In parallel with this initiative, the Rotary Club of Phoenix launched an online awareness campaign to promote the importance of Braille literacy, and the exceptional work carried out by the Lois Lagesse school. The winners were recognized for their creativity and commitment to promoting inclusion.
